Field Adventures

Schedule a full day of hands-on science for up to 140 students from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.!

Class size: Minimum 20 students/Maximum 140 students
Description: Students participate in both the Guided Field Experience and the Discovery Room Program. The Guided Field Experience consists of a 90-minute field experience led by staff naturalists and docents which introduce students to basic ecological concepts. Students are given an overview in the classroom, which is followed by hands-on activities in the 155-acre nature sanctuary. The Discovery Room Program consists of a 45-minute session exploring interactive exhibits rotating with a 45-minute teacher-led, self-guided trail activity.

Tour Times: 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., Tuesday – Friday
Fee: $8 per student

Registration Information:

  • CHAPERONES:

    You MUST bring one adult for every 10 students to ensure safety and to help supervise your students. The program is designed for your students; please ask parents to leave younger siblings at home. Chaperones over the 1:10 requirement are charged $7/person.

  • DRESS:

    Please advise students and parents to dress appropriately for a nature hike and the weather. Students and adults should wear closed-toe shoes for safety. No sandals or high heels please.

  • LUNCH:

    The Full Day program allows for all students to eat lunch on our building apron or inside if raining. (No picnic facilities available.) Please bring lunches separated by class in large bags or bins.

  • BUS PARKING:

    Buses should drop children off first, then turn R out of the Arboretum, and then R into Memorial Park. Buses can park along N. Picnic Lane or in the parking lots by the baseball fields. Click here for a map.

  • INCLEMENT WEATHER:

    Programs are conducted rain or shine. We will provide ponchos for light rain. In case of severe weather, we will offer an equivalent indoor program. If cancellation is necessary due to extreme weather conditions, rescheduling may not be possible due to our tight calendar.

  • CANCELLATIONS:

    Program fees are non-refundable. Changes to enrollment after confirmation letter has been sent will result in a $25 processing fee.

  • TRIP DATE CHANGES:

    Please make sure that your school trip date is correct as we cannot accommodate changes to the requested date once confirmation is given. Changes requested before confirmation will be considered and may result in a $25 processing fee.

  • PAYMENT:

    In order to ensure materials and volunteer help are available for your students, commitment is need from the school in the form of payment. Please submit payment no later than the due date displayed on the invoice, about 2-3 weeks after request is received. Please be aware if booking less that than a month in advance, payment is due at the time of registration. Accepted forms of payment are organizational check, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. All checks must be made payable to: Houston Arboretum & Nature Center.
