School Programs - Meet You Outside! Cooper's Hawk

The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center has created new field trip programs to provide students and teachers with hands-on outdoor Guided Field Experiences designed with a focus on TEKS objectives. The Discovery Room is filled with self-directed activities and exhibits to learn about the natural environment and compliment the Guided Field Experience.

Programs are available for Kindergarten to 12th grade classes. All school programs are aligned to the Texas Education Agency's T.E.K.S. & T.A.K.S. and HISD's Objectives.

Scheduling for 2010-2011 school year will begin August 1. Please note new prices.

  • Guided Field Experience Our science based programs help your students achieve Texas Education Agency science requirements, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS ). Staff naturalists and docents use the 155-acre nature sanctuary as a hands-on laboratory for students. (August - May only)
  • Discovery Room Program The Discovery Room offers students a place to sharpen their observation skills and enjoy hands-on interactive exhibits, microscopes and touch screens. It's a welcoming place to learn about life cycles, food chains, habitats and food webs.
  • Field Adventures Schedule your group for both the Guided Field Experience and Discovery Room Program. A full day of hands -on science.
  • Water Quality Monitoring Middle and High School students can participate in a survey of natural aquatic habitats. Students perform basic water testing procedures and an aquatic invertebrate survey. Participants learn the importance of watersheds and identify their local watershed.
  • Educator's Program Guide
  • Professional Development and Educator Resources include Nature 101 classes which qualify for 2 hrs. of SBEC credit.
  • Discovery Boxes Set up a Discovery Box as an interest center in your classroom. Each box provides activities that teach ecological concepts and relates those concepts to our local environment.
