Naturalists use a variety of different tools to explore the natural world, but rely most on the tools we are all born with - our senses.
Join us for 4 days of sensory exploration! Each day we'll investigate one of our senses and explore how animals and plants use these same senses.
Students will discover how butterflies taste with their feet and snakes smell with their tongue. We'll explore how raccoons hunt at night in murky ponds using their sense of touch. Learn the importance of the sense of hearing for animals in communicating danger, finding a mate, or designating territory. Finally we'll investigate how animals use their sense of sight, and discover which creatures are color blind and the advantages or disadvantages of a colorful coat.
Hands-on activities are the hallmark of our educational programs. Students will create models or crafts that reinforce the concepts taught. All Arboretum classes use our nature sanctuary as an outdoor classroom. Bring a lunch and a snack and be prepared to go outdoors!
