Sometimes it’s fun to get lost in the woods! Woodlands are beautiful and full of life, but they also help humans by providing shade, absorbing carbon, and much more. Meet a forest-dwelling box turtle, make a “tree cookie” magnet, and explore the Arboretum’s different woodland habitats on an evening hike.
Thursday, July 17
Get wild for wetlands! Swamps, marshes, ponds, and bayous are not just great wildlife habitats; they provide vital ecosystem services for humans. Compete to catch the most bugs with your “tongue” like a frog, go on a pond-dipping hike to meet some real wetland critters, and discover how wetlands help control floods and clean our water.
Thursday, August 21
Get down and dirty in our grasslands! Prairies and savannas are like oceans: all the fun stuff is going on under the surface. We’ll use sweep nets to hunt for insects among the grasses, make wildflower seed balls to bring home, and discuss how Houston’s grasslands shaped our history (and may lead us into the future).
