DESCRIPTION:In-person \n\n\n\nFREE \n\n\n\nAll ages \n\n\n\nIn honor of the iNaturalist City Nature Challenge\, we’re holding an Arboretum BioBlitz! A BioBlitz is like a natural scavenger hunt: we will try to observe as many species of plants\, animals\, and fungi as we can in three hours. And because we have over 2\,000 species to find\, we need your help! Just download the free iNaturalist app and come to the Arboretum to make observations. We’ll have information booths to help you get started with the app\, and our staff will be on hand to help you identify the critters you spot on the trails. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe strongly recommend bringing a mask to wear if you want to chat with Arboretum staff and volunteers. Masks are required when entering the Nature Center building.

You will then get a chance to go birdwatching on the trails to practice you skills and start a birding checklist.  \n\n\n\nBefore class\, create an account on www.ebird.org\, and download both the eBird and the Merlin® Bird ID app to any connected smart device. These are both 100% free.

We’ll also take a close look at some of the most common and charismatic trees of the Arboretum and learn general tips and tricks for identifying trees in summer and winter. \n\n\n\nClass will be held rain or shine and will be primarily outdoors. Please dress for the weather. \n\n\n\nInstructor bio: Lawson Taylor is the Forest Ecologist for the Houston Arboretum. He manages the wooded areas of the Arboretum using ecological theories and concepts to maintain a healthy and functional forest ecosystem. He has a degree in Forest Recreation Management from Stephen F. Austin State University.

Blankets\, daubers\, and lawn chairs are encouraged. All parties must be spaced out to provide proper distance between all guests. Your ticket includes 6 squares of bingo (3 squares for children) for 6 rounds and two complimentary drink tickets. Guests can bring their own food and beverages\, but individually wrapped snacks and beverages will be available for purchase. Small prizes will be awarded to the winners of each round.
