Discovery Room Program

The Houston Arboretum is currently booked the 2017/2018 school year. Thank you for your support!

Class size: Minimum 15 students/Maximum 70 students
Description: This 90-minute program consists of several stations including hands-on and interactive exhibits in the Discovery Room and a teacher-led, self-guided trail activity.
Tour Times: 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. or 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., Tuesday – Friday Fee: $6 per student

Activities:

  • Discover at the Learning Tree that animals need the different layers of a tree and forest to survive.

  • Explore aquariums stocked with native animals to learn about pond habitats.

  • Learn about residents of Texas Gulf Coast grasslands.

  • Explore the Arboretum on a self-guided, teacher-led nature hike (teachers/chaperones are provided with materials).

Registration Information:

  • STUDENT COUNT:

    An accurate count of attending students is required before scheduling, as we cannot guarantee additional accommodations after the field trip has been finalized.

  • CHAPERONES:

    You MUST bring one adult for every 10 students to ensure safety and to help supervise your students. The program is designed for your students; please ask parents to leave younger siblings at home. Chaperones over the 1:10 requirement are charged $7/person.

  • DRESS:

    Please advise students and parents to dress appropriately for a nature hike and the weather. Students and adults should wear closed-toe shoes for safety. No sandals or high heels please.

  • LUNCH:

    Our building apron is reserved for full day programs. Half day programs may use our building apron if available. (No picnic facilities at the Arboretum.Please visit Memorial Park for picnicking).

  • BUS PARKING:

    Bus parking is available on site through our 610 entrance. Please look for bus parking signs. Staff will be present to assist drivers. 183 West Loop South, Houston, TX 77024

  • INCLEMENT WEATHER:

    Programs are conducted rain or shine. We will provide ponchos for light rain. In case of severe weather, we will offer an equivalent indoor program. If cancellation is necessary due to extreme weather conditions, rescheduling may not be possible due to our tight calendar.

  • CANCELLATIONS:

    Program fees are non-refundable.

  • PAYMENT:

    In order to ensure materials and volunteer help are available for your students, commitment is needed from the school in the form of payment. Please be aware that if booking less that than a month in advance, payment is due upon receipt. Accepted forms of payment are organizational check, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. All checks must be made payable to: Houston Arboretum & Nature Center.
