Symposium Recap
Houston Arboretum & Nature Center hosted an interactive and intimate Field Notes environmental symposium in September 2023 to connect Houston area practitioners to share their on-the-ground knowledge and discuss larger conservation initiatives.
The goal of this symposium was to foster meaningful dialogue across multi-disciplinary fields – practitioners, educators, designers, landscapers, planners, engineers, contractors, and interested members of the public – regarding the methods, management, and messaging for ecological restoration in an urban setting. Participants were encouraged to connect, compare notes, learn best practices, and become better educators and experts to support and strengthen urban ecological restoration practices, foster collaboration, and encourage innovation to benefit the Greater Houston Region.

One major goal of the Field Notes Symposium was to create the Field Notes Workbook, a document that would extend the impact of the Symposium far beyond the two-day event. The document below serves as a way to share the discussions and main takeaways from the powerful time together at the Field Notes Symposium. Houston Arboretum & Nature Center wants to share their experiences, as well as the experiences of others, for the benefit of current projects or other environmental organizations to inspire and improve the process of restoring and increasing ecologically based landscapes in urban settings.
