for ages 13-17

This semester-long, project-based class welcomes teens who are passionate about nature, enthusiastic about the environment, and curious about storytelling. Exploring and working on technical skills will empower learners to make their voices heard on real-world topics that matter to them. In the class, students will have access to Chromebooks for editing and accessing media and learning how to conduct research. Learners will receive instruction on components of storytelling, filming and editing, and researching questions – all culminating in a presentation of their own short video project in a screening showcase at the Arboretum.

The Art of Storytelling
February 3, 17*, 24

How do you tell a compelling story that matters? This month students learn the art of storytelling and crafting a story that matters to them. We will be meeting with a Master Storyteller and learning powerful techniques to engage our audience.

Film Making
March 3, 17*, 24

Visual storytelling is an art. This month is an introduction to cinematography techniques, storyboarding, shot lists, and more. An award-winning Texas filmmaker will inspire and encourage students, who will then work together, acting as crew and cast.

Editing
April 7, 14*, 21

Editing is the place where the project literally comes together. Students will learn to use editing software and, most importantly, techniques to really make their films stand out. We will be speaking with a professional editor and spending time reviewing our projects.

Showtime!
May 5, 12*, 19

During these final classes we will put the finishing touches on our projects and prepare to share them with the world. At the end of this month, we will host a film festival showcasing the students’ work.

Project Nature Film Festival
May 22 from 5:00-8:00 pm

Friends and family are invited to the premiere of the final products of our hard work. Join us to be inspired, impressed by, and to celebrate these passionate young filmmakers.
