Outdoor Teaching Tips, Tools & Techniques

Thursday, January 20

Studies have shown year after year how time outdoors benefits our mental and physical wellbeing, increases focus, nurtures curiosity, and improves student performance. Taking your lessons outside can be a little intimidating at first. Leave this workshop armed with tips and tricks from our experienced environmental educators and easy introductory lessons for teaching outdoors.

Birding in the Schoolyard

Thursday, February 17

Schoolyards can be excellent habitats for birds and they make for easy study subjects to engage your students in outdoor learning. Learn how to find and participate in community science projects, practice using the latest apps to identify local birds, and plan easy ways to encourage birds to visit your schoolyard.

Wild Jobs

Thursday, April 21

Science is often the favorite subject of many school children and their natural curiosity could lead them to an exciting career in STEM. Participate in hands-on activities used by real scientists to study the natural world and practice ways to bring that experience into your classroom.

City Critters

Thursday, May 19

Our urban spaces are habitats for many fascinating animals and they have a lot to teach us about being adaptable to changing conditions. Celebrate the creatures who share this city’s habitats with us, learn interesting facts about their role in a healthy ecosystem, and leave with lots of activities and stories to connect your students to the nature of Houston.

The Arboretum is currently CLOSED due to the continuing power outage caused by Hurricane Beryl. All classes and events on Monday, July 15 and Tuesday, July 16 have been cancelled or postponed. Please check back for updates.
