You know it’s fall when the Sugarcane Plumegrass ( You know it’s fall when the Sugarcane Plumegrass (Saccharum giganteum) starts blooming! This gorgeous giant can grow to nearly 10 feet tall, towering above most other native grasses. It bears shimmering peach “plumes” of flowers (yes, grasses are flowering plants) that wave in the autumn breeze. Those flowers ripen into seeds that feed wintering birds like goldfinches and sparrows. If you’re looking for a dramatic statement plant for fall, Sugarcane Plumegrass would be an excellent choice for a sunny, moist-to-wet spot.

Fall migrant birds are pouring into Houston…and th Fall migrant birds are pouring into Houston…and they’re HUNGRY! Birds expend massive amounts of energy on their long journey south, and they rely on safe “pitstops” like parks and gardens to refuel. The best way to help these amazing travelers is to grow native plants. Ruby-throated Hummingbirds find nectar at Turk’s Cap and Red Sage, Baltimore Orioles sip nectar from Crossvine and gorge on Virginia Creeper berries, and even insect-eating birds like Blue-gray Gnatcatchers find caterpillars and beetles hiding in plants like Elmleaf Goldenrod. Consider visiting the Arboretum’s Fall Plant Sale on Friday, October 2 and Saturday, October 3 to find bird-friendly native plants that work for your space! #BeakOfTheWeek #WildlifeWednesday
