The Basics of Tree ID

Can you see the forest for the trees? In this class we’ll learn the basics of tree ID, from an introduction to scientific names to an overview of tree morphology. We’ll also take a close look at some of the most common and charismatic trees of the Arboretum and learn general tips and tricks for identifying trees in summer and winter.

Class will be held rain or shine and will be primarily outdoors. Please dress for the weather.

Instructor bio: Lawson Taylor is the Forest Ecologist for the Houston Arboretum. He manages the wooded areas of the Arboretum using ecological theories and concepts to maintain a healthy and functional forest ecosystem. He has a degree in Forest Recreation Management from Stephen F. Austin State University.

The Nature Playscape will be closed Saturday, November 2 from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm for a private party.The Arboretum will be closed until 2 pm on Sunday, November 3 for the National Kidney Foundation's Kidney Walk.
