Six-spotted Tiger Beetles (Cicindela sexguttata) h Six-spotted Tiger Beetles (Cicindela sexguttata) have emerged from their winter burrows. These gorgeous beetles look like green embers flickering just ahead of you as you walk along a forested path, especially the Outer Loop and Ravine trails. They are incredibly fast runners and fliers, chasing down smaller insects to eat like a tiger chasing deer. Their iridescent green color seems to serve two functions: at most angles it’s good camouflage against a leafy background, but when it flashes in the light it warns potential predators that the beetles taste foul.

Who’s the fellow with the fancy yellow socks? It’s Who’s the fellow with the fancy yellow socks? It’s a Snowy Egret! This small heron looks like a “mini-me” of our resident Great Egret but with a black beak and contrasting yellow feet. Snowy Egrets are common now, but they were almost hunted to extinction in the early 1900s because their beautiful feathers were used for hats. Concerned bird-lovers helped pass laws to protect these birds and it’s thanks to them that we can enjoy egrets today! You can admire the Snowy Egret this week in our Woodway ponds. #BeakOfTheWeek #WildlifeWednesday
