Everyone loves trees! A Great Blue Heron has been hanging out at the Meadow Pond and is showing off that yes, herons do spend a surprising amount of time in trees. Trees are crucial habitat for all kinds of unusual birds like herons, Wood Ducks, Black-bellied Whistling Ducks, and more. If you’d like to grow trees (or wildflowers, grasses, and shrubs) for your local birds, you can find plenty at our Fall Plant Sale this weekend (October 11-12) from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm. #BeakOfTheWeek #WildlifeWednesday

Early October in Houston may feel more like summer

Early October in Houston may feel more like summer than autumn, but the amount of daylight is decreasing by about 90 seconds every day. The Arboretum's native plants take this as a signal to make less chlorophyll which causes the telltale turning of leaves from green to shades of golden yellow and orange. If you need help getting in the mood for fall, take a stroll around the Woodway Ponds and enjoy the seasonal change of the Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) and Pickerelweed (Pontederia cordata).

Level up your fall decor at our Pumpkin Planters class next Saturday, October 12! You'll learn how to properly plan, plant, and care for three species of native plants in a cute artificial pumpkin container that won't turn to mush before Halloween like Houston jack-o-lanterns are known to do.
