Did you know that winter is one of the best times to plant trees in Houston? That's why our Arbor Day Celebration falls in January each year and why you might be able to see Arboretum staff planting trees on the grounds.

If you're interested in learning more or preparing to plant your own trees at home, get some expert advice from Rafael Renteria, the Arboretum's certified arborist, during our upcoming Tree Planting Workshop this Saturday, January 18. You'll get all the dos and don'ts of tree planting in this hands-on workshop.

Huge thanks to everyone who helped with the Christmas Bird Count on December 28! It was a fabulous way to end the year. We had some wonderful close encounters with birds including a majestic Red-shouldered Hawk, a surprisingly friendly Brown Thrasher, and a pair of noisy Pileated Woodpeckers. Did you participate in a Christmas Bird Count or feeder watch this winter?

Mark your calendar for our first free, family-friendly open house of the season, our annual Arbor Day Celebration on Saturday, January 25 from 10 am - 2 pm! All are welcome as we celebrate trees and all the incredible things they do. This year we’re focusing on how trees benefit wildlife. Go on a hike to discover how animals use trees, make some of your own wooden woodland friends, learn how to make nest boxes, and you may even meet Johnny Appleseed!
